Chapter 3: Development of Taiwan Bboy
2002, Taiwan started stepping into the world. TBC, a crew which was lead by Bboy Pachin, joined the Freestyle Session Japan, and wrote down the history of the first Taiwan Bboy crew as the competitor of international Bboy competition. 2004, middle Taiwan Bboy crew-Double K took part in BBOY UNIT in Korea.In the same tear,TBC and KGB(from Hsinchu) joined Battle of the Year east south Asia preliminary, and brought the champion back. This champion made them become the first Taiwan group who stepped into the worldwide bboy contest. Although that was the debut in the big stage of battle of the year, they did a good job as the freshman competitor and won a title of the best final 8 crew in the world. However, since there were some disagreements between TBC’s members which caused some bboy’s leaving, TBC slowly transformed in to a dance complex instead of a bboy crew.
The second international Bboy contest in Taiwan was also born in 2006 and 2007. Triple-Kill (The collaboration of T.C and SBC) won the champion twice. And my crew HRC was also the number 1 of B.O.T.Y Taiwan 2006, and then ranked in 9th place in the worldwide final in Germany. At the same year, Bboy Choco and I went to England joined the UK B BOY CHAMPIONSHIPS BBOY SOLO, and we were the first two bboy competitors who join this competition from Taiwan. However, Bboy Choco and B-Mouth left HRC in the reason of different belief in Bboy career. They gathered bboys from different crews, such as TBC, Happy Soul, SBC, T.C, and K.G.B, and became the elite bboy crew of Taiwan which is named the Formosa Crew. They won the laurel of B.O.T.Y Taiwan 2007, and journeyed to China joined the UK CHAMPIONSHIP 2007 there, won the champion back, and got the ticket for the final of UK BBOY CHAMPIONSHIP.
In 2007, an international leading competition’s Asia preliminary was held in Taiwan. And at the end of 2007, Bboy A-Zone from HRC was invited to France by Style2ouf, the biggest street dance website in Europe. He had a friendly battle with the Trickmania team on behalf of Taiwan and Style2ouf team, and successfully drew other bboys’ attention from other countries.
Those things I mentioned above represent the progress of Taiwan bboy and the approval of Taiwan’s Hip Hop culture. We are trying to connect ourselves to the world through the concordance with every bboy and dancers in Taiwan. We are not only trying to push the bboys out from Taiwan, but also perform the better parts of Taiwan.
Until 2005, Taiwan has our own preliminary of Battle of the Year. It provides brilliant opportunity for Taiwan bboy to step into the dream stage in the world. And this time, TBC teamed up with KGB and Double K again, won the championship, and went to Germany again to compete with other bboy crew in the world at B.O.T.Y2005.
In 2003-2007, Business world began to notice that Hip Hop culture was a very important and the latest trend among teenagers. More and more activities was held, more and more foreign information, and more and more workshop classes from overseas countries. This is the time that Taiwan bboy and dancers grabbed their chances to progress and became better and stronger. For example, TBC Bboy Pachin became the host of Taiwan B.O.T.Y preliminary in 2006. And there were bunch of outstanding Bboy crews were formed, including North-East Taiwan, Happy Soul, and Top Coalition (T.C) from northern Taiwan, and Underground, Black-Angle Crew(B.A.C) from middle Taiwan.

Now, Taiwan bboy are no longer nobody to the world. We showed up in lots of international activities, and be invited to numbers of different countries. Of course, this is not the end. There are still a lot of things to do and lots of thing waiting to be accomplished. We will aim at the same target, respect everyone, and create our own Taiwan Bboy style. And last but not least, we will keep trying to win championship in every international competitions.

I am very optimistic toward Taiwan Bboy culture and Hip Hop market. Lots of bboys yield himself to reality. However, I truly believe that BBOY can become a lifework. We have good environments, plenty of teaching opportunities, and sufficient resources. It is normal to make the bboy become more multi-oriented as long as delivering the correct idea of bboying and hip hop culture. We have to make ourselves living, and bring home the bacon. Then we are able to keep practicing and pursuing dream. So I am going to take Redbull BCONE as example, making the business more bboy like instead of commercialize the bboy. In this way, I believe this culture will grow faster and stronger in a very short period of time.
